While the community of Glooscap was officially founded in 1984, the history of the Mi’kmaq people in this region stretches back thousands of years.
Long before the establishment of modern settlements, our ancestors roamed these lands, which served as vital hunting grounds and gathering places. The Mi’kmaq people were deeply connected to the land, navigating the intricate network of rivers that crisscrossed the area. These waterways not only provided essential resources like fish and fresh water, but also served as natural highways for travel.
The rich natural environment of what is now Glooscap First Nation was a source of sustenance, spiritual connection, and cultural identity for countless generations. This deep-rooted connection to the land continues to be a source of pride and inspiration for our community today.
A long time ago, when the Earth was just a vast ocean with no land in sight, the Skyworld above was home to supernatural beings. Among them were two powerful twins: Glooscap, whose name means "good," and his brother Malsm, meaning "weak."
Glooscap, known for his immense size and incredible powers, began shaping the natural landscape of Nova Scotia. His influence can be seen in places like the beautiful Annapolis Valley, which he is said to have created. Using the dirt around him, Glooscap brought animals and birds into existence, making them much larger than they are today—beavers, for example, were once the size of bears. Malsm, however, had a different influence on the world. He created the badger, a creature known for its cunning and deceit, symbolizing the darker forces at play. Eventually, Glooscap defeated Malsm, removing his brother's malevolent influence from the world.
But Glooscap's work didn't stop with the land and animals; he also shaped humanity. He shot four arrows into four white ash trees, and from these trees emerged the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, and Mi'kmaq peoples. Glooscap taught them how to live, what to eat, and how to care for the land. Before leaving on a journey toward the setting sun, he gathered the people and told them that though he would be gone, they could always find him if they searched hard enough. To this day, it is believed that Glooscap’s spirit remains, ready to help those who truly seek him in their time of need.
